Customs
Eating Etiquette
- It is impolite to lick your fingers in front of others.
- Never pour your own drink. You must pour your guests/companions drink and they in turn will pour yours.
- You must remember to say "Itadakimasu" before you begin to eat.
- Never use you chopsticks to point at someone, it's just rude.
- Never give food to someone using the same ends of your chopsticks that you ate with. Use the other end.
- Don't ever take anything from a restaurant. Sugar packs, silverware, etc.
- Japanese tea is not meant to have sugar or cream in it. Don't ask for it.
- When you eat noodles don't forget to make slurping noises. It's impolite if you don't.
- Don't ever tip, it's considered rude.
- When you eat rice or soup remember to bring the plate up under your chin.
- After eating make sure you haven't made a mess.
- Don't pour soy sauce on your rice.
Everyday Manners
- Avoid screaming someones name to get their attention. Try waving at them or something else.
- When on an escalator stay to the left if you don't plan to climb up.
- Try not to blow your nose in front of others. If worse comes to worse, turn your face and use tissue.
- If you happen to have an appointment you must be on time, it is very rude to show up late.
- Always remember to remove your shoes before entering a house.
- Never wear the slippers assigned to the bathroom outside the bathroom.
- Never wear the house slippers outside the house.
- It is polite to bring a gift (food or drink wrapped) when visiting someone.
- It is a custom to sit on the floor in a tatami room.
- Never use slippers in the tatami room.
- It is polite to refuse someones help. Usually you must offer help atleast 3 times before the person agrees to take it.
- Try to avoid too much eye or physical contact.
