About Adopt-A-CatWho am I?Who am I, and why should you listen to me? I'm a new cat parent - a new kitten parent to be more precise. My husband and I are proud parents of two kittens, who we adopted at the age of 3 months from our local cat shelter. This is my first cat experience (I grew up with dogs my entire life - the idea of cats was completely foreign.). I'm really glad I tried something new. Neither my husband nor myself have the time to commit to a dog right now, and cats are great companions for us and each other. We were fortunate enough to be able to adopt a pair - two brothers from the same litter - who are inseparable. They are cuddle bugs who hog the bed at night, but luckily for them, they're really cute - and we're both pushovers, so it works out really well for the four of us in the family! Meeting the boysPicking out cats was supposed to be a "team" decision, but given the hours of operation and our hectic schedules - and my want for a pet - I ended up stopping by the shelter on the way from work "just to see what they have." I actually didn't see my boys until I was ready to leave. I had played with various other kittens and adult cats during my visit, none of which I really felt a connection. I decided to take one last walk around the shelter and found my boys - they had been sleeping the past few times I had walked by their cage, and they were just waking up from a nap. I spent 3 minutes alone with them and realized that they were the perfect kittens for us. I had the adoption assistant fill out my paperwork before I had even called my husband to ask him if it was okay to bring home two - not just one - cat! Getting more involvedSince we've adopted the kittens, I've researched more on how I can help. We are now foster parents for adult cats, and I support veterinary services at the Humane Society of King County 3 hours each week. It's been a great experience as I've learned a lot more about medical care of cats. I'm also learning a lot more about cats in general - and I've got a vet who can answer all my questions. If now isn't a good time to adopt a cat, definitely consider volunteering. It's a great learning experience; plus you get all the pets without the long-term commitment!
