I drew a Royal Gala. It has a lot of red and yellow streaks. I wanted to get the feeling of the streaks but simplified. After drawing everything with the pen tool, I did a lot of tweaking with the direct select tool, both on the points and the handles. I used transparent shapes and experimented with moving things from back to front to back to get a look of tissue paper and to vary the colors with the overlap. Instead of filling in the apple outline, I copied the shape and colored it light yellow with no outline so it wouldn't match up perfectly with the black outline and also so I could put some of the red shapes in front of the yellow but still have the black outline in front of everything.
